We know that 19 hijackers carried out the attacks and that al-Qaeda was responsible for planning the operation. We know that Osama bin Laden and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed were central figures in the conspiracy. We know that the United States government failed to prevent the attacks despite possessing significant pieces of information about the emerging threat. But there is another question that has never completely gone away: How much do we really know about everything that happened before, during, and after September 11?
